Sempronius Man Arrested After Shooting & Killing Pet Pig During Domestic Incident – Law Enforcement Agencies From Two Counties Respond
Back on February 5th, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office says their deputies along with State Police from Cortland County were dispatched to a residence in the Town of Sempronius around 11:15 in the morning. Reports indicated the address was located on Bear Swamp Road.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim had reported to 9-1-1 her boyfriend, identified as 28 year old Norman Dewitt of Sempronius, had shot her pet pig during a domestic dispute; the pig was found dead upon law enforcement arrival. Further investigation of the shooting found that Dewitt removed home security cameras from the residence before shooting the pet pig. Dewitt shot the pig while a 15-year old girl was at the home.
Officers were able to take Dewitt into custody without incident. On February 12th, he was charged with Torture/Injure/not Feed Animal, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Criminal Tampering in the 3rd, all Misdemeanors.
Dewitt was arraigned via the Centralized Arraignment Process and was sent to Cayuga County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said during the time of the release Dewitt remains in custody at the jail. He is due in Sempronius Town Court later this week.
