Schutt Resigns From Common Council After DWI Arrest
Councilperson Wayne Schutt has resigned from the City of Cortland Common Council, effective immediately. Schutt cited personal reasons for his resignation from the Common Council; he served the 1st Ward for the City of Cortland since 2022, winning the position in the November 2021 General Election.
In a release by the City of Cortland, Schutt had made the decision to resign to focus on matters in his personal life. Schutt was arrested and charged with DWI after a motor vehicle crash last Friday, May 9th in the City of Cortland.
“It has been an honor to serve the residents of Cortland’s 1st Ward. I am disappointed that I am unable to complete my term, but I believe stepping aside at this time is in the best interest of the community. I appreciate the opportunity to have served and thank those who supported me along the way.” Schutt said in a statement.
With his departure from the Common Council, the City of Cortland will look towards filling the vacancy created within the coming days. The City of Cortland says information on who will possibly fill the seat will be shared when available.
“Wayne Schutt served the 1st Ward on the Common Council and contributed to discussions that shaped city decisions during his time in office. We appreciate his service to the City of Cortland and wish him well as he steps away for personal reasons.” Mayor Scott Steve said in a statement regarding Schutt’s resignation.
