School is officially open as area school districts begin their school year today, September 6th. District’s include: Cincinnatus, Cortland, Homer, Marathon, McGraw, and Truxton Academy.
With this, a reminder for motorists to be alert with students walking to school, buses on the roads, and school zone speed limits.
Driver’s who pass a stopped school bus illegally will be subjected to a ticket and face fines along with other penalties. Fines could range from $250 for a first offense to $1,000 for a third offense within three years. Additionally, driver’s could receive jail time up to 30 days for a first violation and up to 180 days for a second and third offense. Three violations in a year will have your license suspended for a minimum of six months.

For those walking to school, it is state law to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, even if the pedestrian is not in your lane. You must also remain stopped until the pedestrian has finished crossing the street. Pedestrians have the right of way. Failing to stop could result in a $150 fine and up to $300 for a second offense within 18 months.
