The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of recent reports that have come into the Sheriff’s Office of people receiving an email which is then followed up by phone calls from the caller claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House.
The caller (scammer) tells the victim that they have won a large sum of money and a brand new vehicle. The caller then tells the victim that they must pay all the taxes before they receive the prize and it must be paid via gift cards.
The Sheriff’s Office asks residents to never give out any personal information and not to send money or provide any credit/gift card numbers. The best thing to do if you receive a call like this is to hang up and contact area law enforcement. Never click on any links from emails you don’t recognize.
