Sales Tax Collections Jump Nearly 9% in Cortland County For Month of June
Sales tax collections in Cortland County showed a large increase for the month of June after a 2.4% decline for the month of May. The New York State Comptroller’s Office reported Cortland County had sales tax collections of $4.13 million dollars for the month of June, a 8.9% increase from June 2023.
Overall year-to-date, sales tax collections in Cortland County are up 3.4% at 19.82 million dollars. This time last year the county collected $19.17 million dollars. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says local sales tax collections in the state are up overall by 2.2% to $127 million dollars.
“Growth in local sales tax collections has moderated, as both personal consumption and inflation cooled through the second quarter,” DiNapoli said. “New York City was again the largest single contributor to local sales tax growth, and its moderate increase in collections reflects in part a tourism industry that continues to improve.”
Sales tax collection growth also showed stronger results in the second quarter for the year, a 1.6% increase compared to the first quarter this year.
Neighboring Tompkins County didn’t have as good of news. The Comptroller’s Office reported Tompkins County experienced a 3.5% decrease in collections for the month of June at 6.30 million dollars. Tompkins County had collections of $6.53 million in June of 2023 and year-to-date, the county is down about 1% in sales tax collections.
