The Federal Highway Administration and the New York State Department of Transportation have wrapped up a safety audit of the intersection of Route 96B and 79 In Ithaca. The review follows a fatal tractor-trailer crash into a Downtown Ithaca restaurant.
The crash at Simeon’s restaurant in June 2014 killed bartender Amanda Bush and injured seven others.
The review looked at the design of the roads and traffic flow of the intersection. The report is expected to identify possible improvements to avoid another accident.
Some changes have already been made including cutting down trees and brush to improve sign visibility and creating additional warning signs with flashers to alert drivers to the oncoming hill.
US Senator Chuck Schumer said he will push for federal highway funding to support any suggested improvements included in the final report.
