A regular patrol of the parking lot at Cortland High School on Thursday morning turned up a rifle and shotgun on the back seat of a student’s car.
Jack Mertz, 18, of Homer, told police he was taking the hunting weapons from his dad’s house to his mom’s house.
Cortland School authorities and Cortland Police both say there was no threat and the student was not considered a threat to the school.
The parents were called and Cortland Police say the student was charged with felony Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds.
The school was not in lockdown.
Mertz is to return to Cortland City Court next month.
