Residents & Cortland Fire Quickly Knock Out Grease Fire

Just before 10:40pm on Tuesday, May 13th, Cortland Fire was dispatched to 44 Rickard Street, Cortland Park Apartments, for a reported grease fire. Cortland County 9-1-1 Dispatch also reported the residents were unable to extinguish the fire.
Two engines, a ladder, and a fly car with Cortland Fire quickly responded to the scene. Firefighters entered the building to the apartment equipped with fire extinguishers and found a moderate smoke condition in the hallway to the apartment and inside the apartment itself. Cortland Fire says the fire on the stove was mostly out, but used a dry chemical extinguisher to ensure it was out.
Once the fire was confirmed out, firefighters then ventilated the building with a fan and metered the air inside to ensure it was safe for residents to reenter the apartment and building.
Cortland Fire says the resident assisted the fire department prior to their arrival by placing a lid over the grease fire and then evacuated the building. Firefighters were able to make contact which made the search easier and allowed firefighters to focus on the fire.
Residents are reminded to never put water on a grease fire. Smothering a grease fire is the best method. No residents or firefighters were injured.
