Report: The Who To Replace Elton John In Las Vegas

Music News

The Who are reportedly in talks to replace Elton John as the featured act at Las Vegas’ Colosseum Theatre at Caesars Palace. The band, who played an abbreviated Vegas run last summer, have been rumored to be leaning towards a “Sin City” residency for 2018, and according to several sources — including Britain’s — the band’s pay day could reach over $46 million for a two year run — depending on how many dates Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend decide to commit to. Casino shows tend to usually run about 75 minutes long — that’s around 45 minutes less than the Who’s usually arena gig — and far less taxing on Roger Daltrey’s 73-year-old vocal cords.

According to a Vegas insider: “Elton is leaving, so the promoters and resort wanted to bring in an act of equal stature. Their shows this summer were a critical success and a sell out, with Roger’s voice sounding better than ever. They enjoyed the gigs and unique opportunity of a residency and were open to repeating it for a longer run. The talks have been going well and there is a genuine hope that a deal will be done.”

The Who’s history has shown no shortage of instances where Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend have butted heads regarding the direction of the band throughout the decades. Over 50 years on, Townshend explained to us that today, he and Daltrey happily stand as equals: “I think Roger has grown in a whole number of different ways. And one of the ways that he’s grown is, in a sense, in learning to conduct a power struggle within a band, because it’s just he and I. It’s not four people; he’s not in a corner fighting to express himself. It’s just him and me now. So, if he and I sit down to talk, if we sit to discuss music, or projects, or albums, or songs that we might do, it’s much more equal than out ever has been in the past. And I think for the both of us, that means a complete reappraisal of the way that we work together.”
