A report recently released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, has identified six type of drivers by analyzing risky driving behaviors, with the most common dangerous behaviors being speeding, distracted driving, and aggressive driving.
The annual Traffic Safety Culture Index survey developed the sic driver profiles through examining patterns of self-reported risk driving behaviors among a large sample of drivers. Only 4 in 10 in the survey fell into the “Safe Drivers” category, AAA says.
“Despite acknowledging the dangers, some drivers continue to engage in potentially deadly behaviors, particularly speeding.” said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety President and Executive Director. “Understanding the different types of risky driving behaviors and the characteristics of drivers who engage in them is crucial for developing targeted interventions to achieve safe mobility.”
AAA says with daily driving patterns and traffic volumes rebounding from pandemic lows, traffic fatalities remain high. Fatal crashes involving risky behaviors such as impaired driving or speeding remain a major issue on roadways.
The six driver profiles that were identified by the Traffic Safety Culture Index were:
- Safe Drivers (accounting for 41.2% of those in the survey)
- Speeding Drivers (22.7%)
- Distracted and Aggressive Drivers (17.3%)
- Distracted Drivers (15%)
- Most Dangerous Drivers (2.4%)
- Impaired Drivers (1.3%)
AAA continued in their release saying a majority of drivers perceive unsafe driving behaviors as very or extremely dangerous, and have admitted to doing the behaviors at least once in the past 30 days.
