Republican Congressman Richard Hanna is joining fellow New York Congressman Louise Slaughter in a push to restore federal funding for local public transit systems. The money would be cut in the new federal Highway bill.
Hanna and Slaughter have organized a bipartisan coalition of 60 Members of Congress to push back against proposed cuts to transit programs that could affect commuters across seven states.
The coalition is pushing to restore cuts in the High-Density States program, which was eliminated in the House Surface Transportation bill.
Locally, the cuts would cost the Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit bus system $200 thousand dollars a year. It would cut millions the Syracuse Centro bus system. Here in Cortland the cut is not expected to impact Cortland’s First Transit bus system.
