Reminder to Plan Ahead Prior to Thanksgiving Travels – Nearly 80 Million Expected to Travel During Thanksgiving Holiday

Thanksgiving is this Thursday and AAA says if you plan on traveling at least 50 miles or more to spend time with your family or friends, you’re not alone. The organization says nearly 80 million Americans, 79.9 million to be exact, plan to travel over 50 miles during the long holiday weekend beginning tomorrow through Sunday, December 2nd.

This year’s projected number of travelers is up 1.7 million people when compared to 2023, and 2 million more than pre-pandemic numbers (2019). Out of the nearly 80 million travelers, around 71.5 million will be traveling via automobile, and 5.84 million by air travel. Around 2.28 million will be traveling through other means such as trains.

Those traveling via automobile won’t feel the pain at the pump though. AAA says the national average for a gallon of gasoline continues to decline leading up to the holiday weekend. The national average is $3.05 a gallon; New York’s average stands at $3.15 a gallon.
