Reminder – Reconstruction of Intersection at Main, Port Watson, and Tompkins Streets to Begin Tonight

Beginning at 6pm this evening, the reconstruction of the intersection at Main, Port Watson, and Tompkins Street will begin. Work will take place during the overnight hours from 6pm to 7am. The reconstruction of the intersection is expected to take three days to complete.

The reasoning for the overnight work is to shorten the reconstruction process. Mayor Steve said during the City of Cortland’s last Common Council meeting that if they did not decide to do the overnight reconstruction, the project would’ve taken three weeks to complete. He added the overnight work will require the closure of the intersection from Main Street. According to Crown City Rising, detour signage will be in place for all three streets, Port Watson, Tompkins, and Main Streets.

Suit-Kote will work on removing old brick at the intersection that was cut-up when new water and sewer lines were installed as part of the Main Street Reconstruction project. Due to the brick being cut-up, it led the brick to become uneven and lift upwards due to the icing and thawing over winter. Suit-Kote will tear out the brick underneath and go down 18 inches within the intersection and rebuild the base for the street above.

During daytime hours, construction crews will be grading and installing new sidewalks as well as snow storage areas. Crown City Rising says this work may also lead to temporary lane closures.

Motorists are asked to plan ahead and to use caution when traveling through the work-zone. Updates may be found at CrownCityRising.com.
