Reconstruction of Intersection at Main, Port Watson, and Tompkins Streets to Begin Monday Evening
Beginning at 6pm on Monday, May 12th, the intersection of Main, Port Watson, and Tompkins Street will undergo reconstruction with work being done by Suit-Kote. Mayor Steve made the announcement during Tuesday’s Common Council meeting. Work will take place during the overnight hours between 6pm and 7am.
Mayor Steve added the work is expected to last through Wednesday evening (May 14th) at the latest. He added the overnight work will require the closure of Main Street at the intersection; detour signage will be in place. Mayor Steve continued to add that the overnight reconstruction option was taken instead of the 3 week estimate if it was to be done without disruption to traffic on Main Street.
A reconstruction of the intersection is required due to damage to the original brick street underneath the intersection. When new water and sewer lines were installed, crews had to cut through the brick where it was damaged from the ice/thaw from the winter. This damage caused the brick to unevenly lift upwards at the intersection. Suit-Kote will tear out the brick underneath and go down 18 inches within the intersection and rebuild the base for the street above.
