REAL ID Requirement Start Date Looms

It is now less than two months until the REAL ID requirement takes effect. Beginning on May 7th, federal rules will require all travelers who are either flying domestically or entering a secure federal facility to have a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, Passport or another form of identification that is federally compliant; a regular license will not be accepted.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is still encouraging all New Yorkers to visit their local DMV Office to get a REAL ID. For Cortland County, that is located at 112 River Street in Cortland.

“Whether you are planning to fly soon or not, the REAL ID deadline is almost here, and we want all New Yorkers to be prepared,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “The last thing you want to do is delay a trip, or worse, be unable to fly if you need to in a pinch because you don’t have the right identification. So don’t delay in making your REAL ID appointment, and before you come see us, check out our online resources so you can be sure you have everything you need.”

The REAL ID regulation was originally passed by Congress in 2005 as a response to the September 11th attacks. According to the DMV, the federal REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses, permits and ID cards. The law requires customers to bring certain documents to the DMV to prove who they are and to have a new photograph taken before their REAL ID can be issued.

Even if your current license, permit, or non-driver ID is not expired, the DMV says you should get a REAL ID. The DMV has created an online document guide found HERE as well as an online application pre-screening process HERE.
