An original deadline of May 2023, would’ve required those looking to travel by air to have either a REAL ID or passport in order to travel, but that is now delayed by two years, until 2025.
The Department of Homeland Security has made the decision to delay the requirement another two years. The department has delayed the requirement twice already.
The reason for the delay is to give states additional time needed for their residents to obtain a REAL ID before the deadline. Currently, the NY DMV offers REAL ID to anyone wishing to sign-up.
