It was around 6:45 in the evening on Thursday, February 15th, when emergency personnel were dispatched to CrossFit Cortland at the Crescent Commons Building in the City of Cortland. In a release, the City of Cortland Fire Department says it was a typical workout session when an athlete has suffered a medical emergency.

The person, a male in his 60s, had dropped to the floor. Co-owner of CrossFit, Quentin Giles, had immediately deduced the person was suffering from cardiac arrest. Giles, who was off-duty from his job as a Student Resource Office for Homer, began CPR on the person.

Cortland Fire says athletes Kristi Marcellus and Holly Mulvaney assisted Giles and 9-1-1 was called. The gyms Automated External Defibrillator (AED), was retrieved by Nick Mrozowski. The AED was applied to the person and showed a shock was needed to the person. A shock was given and CPR was continued until the machine detected a pulse.

EMS personnel were on scene about two minutes after the call to 9-1-1. Cortland Fire says due to the actions by staff and bystanders, the man’s chances of survival from the cardiac arrest were improved greatly.

The patient was taken to an area hospital for further treatment and is expected to have a full recovery and will be released from the hospital in a few days.

CrossFit Cortland owner, Amanda Giles, said the AED was one of the first purchases for the gym three years ago. All staff are trained for CPR and AED use at the gym.

“We at the Cortland Fire Department commend their actions during this event, as well as the planning/preparation that occurred in the years leading up to it.” The fire department said in a press release.

Cortland Fire is offering CPR, AED, and first aid training on March 27th at 6:30 pm. The class costs $15 and is the cover for the certification fee by Health and Safety Institute. More information on the upcoming class can be given by contacting City Fire Headquarters at 607-756-5612.
