Purchase of Former Virgil Elementary School Now Official

The purchase of the former Virgil Elementary School is now official. Both Jeffery and Stephen Terwilliger have announced they have officially acquired the property.

It comes after two years of working with the Town of Virgil for the needed approvals for use of the building. The building is planned to be converted to upscale housing for those 55 years old or older as well as creating a community center that will serve the Virgil area.

In a release, both Jeffrey and Stephen plan to retain the historical integrity of the property with minimal changes on the exterior with the exception of landscaping and additional parking. The former school’s playground, walking trail, sports fields, basketball courts, and picnic area will remain.

The building will include 19 apartments and a community center. The community center will partner with the Homer Center for the Arts to include stage performances, dance classes, music, exercise, cooking, acting, directing, crafts and more.

“The Community Center will also host events catered to the senior population in town such
as card night, board game night, senior dinners, senior luncheons and more.” according to the release.

Work is expected to take place soon with occupancy by June 2024.
