Tonight during the City of Cortland Common Council meeting at 6pm at City Hall in Downtown Cortland, a public hearing will be held regarding Local Law No. 1 of 2024 that would limit tobacco retail sale establishments within the City of Cortland.
The local law would ban retail sales of tobacco products within 1,000 feet of all schools in the City of Cortland as well as any youth oriented facility such as a library, playground, youth center, licensed child-care facility or preschool and any other type of facility frequented by youths.
For the current licensed businesses within the proposed buffer zone, they would be grandfathered into the law and still allowed to sell cigarettes. However, once that business ceases, a license will not be renewed on that property. Cortland Mayor Scott Steve noted in the last Common Council meeting, of the 18 licensed tobacco retail establishments, only 4 were outside the buffer zones.
