On a sunny Monday afternoon, members of the Cortland County Legislature, Cortland County Child Advocacy Center, and others joined at Courthouse Park to recognize April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

During the event, Cortland County Legislature Sandra Price (D-LD14) read a proclamation from the Cortland County Legislature recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month within the county.

After the proclamation was read, Cortland County Child Advocacy Center Director Kris Beard spoke on what the pinwheels represent during the event:

“Pinwheels represent a safe, happy, and carefree childhood. The kind every child deserves.”

In the background of representatives were 151 blue pinwheels, which serve as a visual reminder of the number of children abused in Cortland County last year.

For those interested in planting their own pinwheel garden, you may visit the Advocacy Center at 60 Central Ave. in Cortland between the hours of 9am to 4pm. A pinwheel garden costs $20 and includes 10 pinwheels and 1 lawn sign. For more information you may call the Advocacy Center at 607-753-5087.
