Power issues lead to evacuation of Cortland Walmart

Local News

A large tree branch fell on primary power lines yesterday, which caused a brief outage and other issues leading to an impromptu evacuation of the Cortlandville Walmart on Bennie Road.

Town of Cortlandville Asst. Fire Chief Mike Biviano said his department was alerted just past 6 pm of a tree down on wires in the area of State Route 13 and Byrne Hollow Crossing.

Moments later, crews got word of a small brush fire near Walmart and quickly extinguished it. As both incidents were being cleared, reports came in of several arcing light fixtures in the store.

Biviano said his team then investigated various electrical components and determined the store was safe to reoccupy.

The building was then turned over to Walmart’s safety and asset protection team.
