Population Of Bald Eagles In New York State At Record Levels

Local News

New York’s bald eagle population has hit a record of 323 breeding pairs.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation says aerial surveys show that about 73% of bald eagle nesting territories are occupied this year.

Nesting territories are areas known to be occupied by bald eagles and 442 are included in DEC’s monitoring efforts.

Use of the pesticide DDT nearly eliminated bald eagles from the state by the late 1960s.
