Fifty-six-year-old Bishop-elect Douglas John Lucia of the Ogdensburg Diocese will soon be ordained the 11th Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, succeeding Bishop Robert Cunningham who has served since May 2009.
Bishop Cunningham submitted his resignation in June 2018 to the Vatican upon turning 75, as is required by canon law. He will continue to serve as the Apostolic Administrator until Bishop – elect Lucia’s ordination and installation.
That will happen in a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Syracuse on a date soon to be determined.
The Syracuse diocese encomposses over 220,000 Catholics in seven counties, covering nearly 5,500 square miles.
