Poll Finds New Yorkers Want Full Time Legislators For Same Pay

Local News

A new poll shows New Yorkers think State lawmakers should be required to work full time for their current pay.

The Sienna Poll found that the 865 voters surveyed believe state lawmakers earn enough with their current $79,500 base salary. They also want a ban on lawmakers earning outside income.

Several government reform advocates back curbing legislators’ outside income as one way of addressing corruption and conflicts of interest.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed limiting it to 15 percent of their state pay, similar to the limits on Congress.

Currently, lawmakers are in session about six months out of the year.

89% of voters of the voters surveyed also think corruption is a serious problem in Albany.

Two-thirds say it’s a serious problem among legislators from their own area.
