A Cortland man was arrested early Monday morning after a domestic incident on Orchard Street, where police witnessed him strangling a woman.
City officers were called to a disturbance around 12:30 am and arrived to find 34-year-old Michael Buchalla, who was straddling a 38-year-old female victim on the ground with his hands around her neck.
Buchalla, of Port Watson Street, got up and fled as soon as he saw police.
Investigators say at one point, the victim temporarily lost consciousness while being choked.
She was treated and released for minor injuries at GCMC.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant and didn’t locate Buchalla until hours later on Main Street, finally taking him into custody at around 3:30 pm.
His charges include the following:
- Harassment 2nd (V)
- Obstruction of governmental administration (M)
- False personation (M)
- Strangulation 2nd (F)
- Aggravated family offense (F)
Following arraignment, Buchalla was remanded to Cortland County Jail.
No bail or appearance information has yet been made available.
