Police agencies in Cortland want the public to know they plan a special effort to crackdown on drivers who are impaired over Halloween.

“It’s okay to be scary on Halloween,” according to Sheriff Mark Helms, “but not when you’re driving.”

Helms says police agencies in Cortland County will join the statewide STOP-DWI crackdown that starts Friday and runs through Halloween on Monday.

Helms says statistics show that high-visibility enforcement efforts like this and sobriety checkpoints can reduce drunk driving fatalities about 20%.
