Police Point To False Filings In Welfare Fraud Accusation

Local News

A woman from McGraw faces felony Welfare Fraud charges, following an investigation by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and the Cortland County Department of Social Services (DSS).

Police say Nancy Watson, who is 47, failed to report how much money she made to Cortland County DSS, between April and September of this year. She was also charged with felony Grand Larceny and Offering a False Instrument for filing.

Investigators say she also filed fraudulent documents with DSS regarding her assets and resources.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Newcomb reports that Watson received more than $2,100 in benefits she wasn’t entitled to.

Watson was arrested Thursday and issues appearance tickets to return to Cortland City Court on December 13.
