*This story has been updated following additional information by Cortland Police
Cortland Police say the pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on Tompkins Street in front of the YMCA on Monday evening is likely at fault. Information the pedestrian provided didn’t seem to line up with the crash.
Around 8:12 Monday evening, Cortland Fire and Police were dispatched to Tompkins Street for a reported person struck by a vehicle. Dryden Ambulance was also dispatched for mutual aid for TLC Ambulance.
Deputy Chief for Cortland Police, Cheyenne Cute, told X101 News the male individual struck by the vehicle told police he was working on a friend’s tire on the side of the road when he was struck. However, Cute says there was no vehicle or bicycle on the side of the street being worked on when police arrived and it is unknown if there actually was one.
Cortland Police say the driver of the vehicle reported to police the man suddenly entered the roadway when they struck the man. The driver said they were traveling at or below the posted speed limit at the time of the accident. The vehicle was traveling westbound on Tompkins Street with the male pedestrian coming from the northside of the street.
The man was transported to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Cute added. No tickets have been issued at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
