Cortland Police and the state are continuing efforts to crack down on underage drinking. As students returned to town this past weekend police and DMV agents conducted a fake ID Sting at local bars.
Friday and Saturday Cortland Police Officers issued 15 tickets to students with fake ID’s at local bars and taverns.
Of the 15 people ticketed, 14 are SUNY Cortland students. Five people were also ticketed for possessing alcohol while under the age of 21.
The fake IDs were turned over to the DMV for administrative action, which can include a 90-day suspension of driving privileges.
Officers from the Cortland Police Department are also visiting students living off-campus this week to “advise them of the state and local laws that govern their conduct.”
Last week, the state warned students about becoming victims of identity theft when buying fake ID’s over the internet.
