Phillips Free Library Story Walk Ribbon Cutting This Evening

The Homer Phillips Free Library announced earlier this week that they and Village of Homer Mayor, Pat Clune will unveil the StoryWalk at Newton Park with a ribbon cutting at 6 pm this evening.

Newton Park is the playground located on the corner of Cayuga Street and Bartlett in the village. The StoryWalk is a book displayed outside in a park, or playground, or anywhere else; parents and their kids can walk from board to board and read the story.

X101 had a chance to talk with Phillips Free Library Director Martsje Vanderschaaf-Riehlman on the book she chose and why. She chose “Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood, by Isabel Campoy.”

She thinks the book fits with the public libraries’ Summer Reading theme, “Color Our World.” And the book is colorful, upbeat, and does not have large amounts of text in it, she went on to say.

The book is based on Rafael and Candice Lopez, who revived their community in the East Village near downtown San Diego through art.
