Considered to be the unofficial start of the Summer Season, Memorial Day is Monday, May 29th, and nearly 42.3 million Americans are expected to travel over 50 miles or more from their home.
AAA projects the increase is about 7% higher than last year, with 2.7 million more people traveling. The highest number of travelers will be traveling via automobile (an estimated 37.1 million), followed by air travel (3.39 million), and other methods of travel (1.85 million).
“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”
This year’s top destinations for travelers are Orlando Florida, New York City, and Las Vegas Nevada.
