The New York State Police and the Department of Transportation teamed up again this year for “Operation Hardhat,” a joint initiative to crack down and reduce reckless behavior through work zones.
On Thursday (July 16), they were on Interstate 81-SB just past Exit 11 in the city of Cortland, within an Economy Paving work zone where a total of 30 tickets were issued:
- 19 operating a cell phone while driving
- 1 Move Over violation
- 2 no seatbelt
- 2 speeding
- 6 other violations
WXHC spoke with Trooper Aga Agnieszka and DOT rep Curtis Jetter prior to the iniative for more.

The operation highlights the importance of safe driving in construction, maintenance and emergency operations along state highway.
Troopers were dressed as highway maintenance workers and observed violators who were speeding, on their cell phone or failing to follow the Move Over Law.
