One Transported to Hospital After 2nd Alarm Fire at Sherbrook Apartments in Cortlandville
Around 7:20 Friday evening, both Cortlandville and Homer Fire was dispatched to the Sherbrook Apartments on Halstead Drive for a reported apartment fire. Cortlandville Fire says officers with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office arrived to the scene in minutes after already being in the area. Officers confirmed to dispatch of smoke coming from one of the buildings.
Due to smoke coming through the roof of the building, a 2nd alarm was requested by Cortlandville Fire to bring in additional resources and manpower. Firefighters went to the third floor of the apartment building and found an active kitchen fire; firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly.

One person was aided by firefighters from an adjacent apartment out of the building. That person was treated for smoke inhalation and then transported to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center for further evaluation. No additional injuries were reported by Cortlandville Fire.
The building sustained significant smoke and water damage, Cortlandville Fire says. Residents of the building are currently being assisted by the Red Cross.
Assisting Cortlandville on scene were the Homer, McLean, Virgil, and Dryden Fire Departments. McGraw Fire provided standby coverage. Additional assistance was provided by the Cortland County Department of Emergency Response and Communications, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department and TLC-EMS.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
