One Person Airlifted After Dirt Bike Crash in Lapeer

Just before 5 in the evening on Friday, October 25th, emergency personnel responded to a personal injury accident on Route 221 in the Town of Lapeer. The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says when their officers arrived on scene, the operator was already receiving medical attention from the Marathon Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (MAVAC).

Due to the extent of the injuries the operator sustained, they were transported via helicopter by Guthrie Air to an area hospital. In a release, MAVAC says 3 of their members provided aid to the patient who was operating a dirt bike, Paramedic Kally Haskell, EMT Joe O’Mara, and EMT Harshini Cheruvu.

Officers with the Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the cause of the crash and found the operator, whose identity has not been released at this time, was operating an “unauthorized motor vehicle” on the roadway. The Sheriff’s Office says the operator then left the right shoulder of the roadway and crashed into the ditch.

Marathon Fire Department provided assistance at the scene and landing zone in the Village of Marathon.
