One firefighter sustained minor injuries after the Cortland Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 137-139 Main Street, the former location of Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant and Grocery Store.
The call came in around 5:26 in the morning on Friday, December 15th. City of Cortland Police Officers who were on scene reported of smoke coming from the roof of the building. Upon arrival by firefighters, they found light smoke coming from the roof.
Firefighters then forced their way into the building via the front door and found a person inside the building on the second floor. The person was removed by firefighters and then the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire was started from a BBQ grill located in the rear bedroom.
The rest of the building was searched for any other occupants and checked for fire extension. The building was then secured by Cortland Fire and turned over to the property owner.
The cause of the fire was found to be intentional after an investigation.
