Homer Fire Chief Jay Riley tells X101 News firefighters had the person extricated out of the car within 10 minutes. Firefighters had to cut the roof and remove the doors of the vehicle in order to safely remove occupant. He noted the front of the car was completely smashed in. Riley credits the quick extrication from coordination by firefighters and the use of the department’s AMKUS equipment, which the department purchased last year.

Route 41 was closed between Glen Haven Road and Route 41a until 1 in the afternoon.

Riley says both occupants, who are residents from the Town of Homer, were transported to Upstate University Hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says the cause of the crash is believed to be due to weather conditions on Route 41 Thursday morning. The investigation remains ongoing. Additionally assisting on scene was the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit.
