On Demand: Meet Cortland County, Saturday, October 14, 2017, CRMC Nurse Navigator Cary Wilk, RN
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
But treatment is often more than just medicine.
Nurse Navigator Carey Wilk assists patients at the Cancer unit at Cortland Regional Medical Center. “To help them through the time of either surgery, treatments on to after their treatments to survivorship and to make sure that they stay on track, help them get any resource needs so there are no barriers to their care.”
Wilk says the assistance given to patients can extend outside of the cancer clinic. “Even attending other appointments with her to help keep her on track and to make sure that she will still be able to move forward with her treatments.”
Wilk discusses her work on Meet Cortland County, now available On Demand at WXHC.com from X101 News. “’Cause with a diagnosis like this, they’re not really comfortable, and they’re going through a hard enough time as it is.”
Helping the patient is what it is about for Wilk. “It’s pretty involved, the first couple of weeks with all kinds of tests and meeting other doctors and it’s a very difficult time with that diagnosis, but then you add all of these appointments on top of that it’s a lot to handle for one person.”
This is work she enjoys. “It’s very rewarding. The patients, they may not always seem like they’re in need of so much but when you finally get to be able to talk with them and they start to open up a little bit and you’re able to see what their needs really are.”
