Wendell E. Tanner (95) of Cortland, NY passed away peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of 16 Apr 2021. Wendell was born in Endicott, NY on 25 Oct 1925 to Marion A and Edreia P Tanner. He married Theresa Mae Holmes on 2 Jun 1951 with whom he had two sons, David L of Cortland, and James E (Thomas Mingo) of Erie, PA, all of whom survive. Wendell is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristina Tanner Furi of Cortland, and Patrick D (Crystal) Tanner of Mauldin, SC; great grandchildren Zahara, Roman, Viviana, Isabella, and Etta Petrella, all of Cortland; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Joanne Tanner.
The family moved to the Cortland area in 1964 as the result of Wendell’s employment with New York State Electric and Gas in Ithaca, NY, from which he retired as a payroll clerk in 1990. Post retirement, Wendell found pleasure travelling to visit family, and hiking and canoeing in the Adirondacks.
Wendell was a member of the “Greatest Generation” and served as a PFC with the US Army’s 69th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Among his awards and decorations are the Bronze Star, and the NYS Conspicuous Service Cross.
Wendell was predeceased by his wife Theresa (22Mar21), his parents, and sisters Agnes, and Beverly. There will be no calling hours or services per his wishes. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at an undisclosed Adirondack location.
