Ruth Marie Turner, 94, of Homer, died on January 5, 2024. Ruth was born on October 27, 1929 in the Town of Sempronius (Bear Swamp), Cayuga County, New York, the daughter of Ernest J. Smith and Anna Marie Kester. She graduated from Moravia Central School in 1948 and retired in 1991 from a successful career of 34 years with TRW of Union Springs (formerly Wickes Manufacturing; General Products).
Her only child was born during her marriage to Milton James Patten. In 1961 Ruth married Harold G. “Bud” Turner and assisted him in his second career as a grain farmer on their 100-acre farm in the Town of Fleming. They were avid NASCAR racing fans – attending many racing trials at the Daytona 500 – and enthusiastic fans of modified stock car racing on the local circuit. Boating on Owasco Lake was enjoyable for them and the grandchildren.
For several years Ruth served as a local election inspector. Her various hobbies included knitting and crocheting, primarily for the benefit of her beloved grandchildren, and throughout her life Ruth adored her many dogs and cats.
Beginning near her 90th birthday Ruth enjoyed her friends and helpful staff at the Elizabeth Brewster House in Homer, NY, and for the last month of her life she received needed medical care and comfort from the professionals on Misty Glen at Guthrie Cortland Nursing Center, Cortland, NY.
Surviving Ruth are her daughter, Marie (Phillip) Rumsey of Homer; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Devassy, of Huntington Station, Long Island, NY, Phillip Rumsey, Jr. of Watervliet, NY and William Rumsey, of Fayetteville, NY; and four great-grandchildren. Husband Harold G. “Bud” Turner predeceased her in 2008.
Arrangements are with Brew Funeral Home, 48 South Street, Auburn, NY. A graveside ceremony will be held at Lakeview Cemetery, Town of Fleming at a later date.
Contributions may be made to the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY, 41 York Street, Auburn, NY 13021 in memory of Ruth M. Turner.
