Philip R. (Phil) Thayer, 70, of Genoa, passed away at home on November 8, 2023.
Phil was born March 18, 1953 in Auburn, a son of the late Gordon E. and Marilyn (King) Thayer. A lifelong area resident, Phil graduated from Southern Cayuga Central School and was a self-employed legend, operating as “Phil Thayer General Contractor.” He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, bird watching, reading, camping, his Harley Davidsons, NASCAR, hiking, and snowmobiling, and had been a member of the Union Springs American Legion Post 1107.
He is survived by his wife, Georgetta (Freary) Thayer; his son, Jeremy Thayer (Shana), of Sarasota, FL; step-sons, Michael Wheeler (Rebecca), Kyle Wheeler, and Ed Swartout II; step-daughters, LeAnne Swan (Scott) and Megan Wheeler (Dave); a brother, Errol Thayer (Karen); sister, Leah Lucas (John) and Ellen Marshall; and his grandchildren: Samuel, Noah & Olivia Thayer, Hailee Howe & Haylee Swan, Mason, Mollie & Ella Swartout, Jeramiah & Daisy Wheeler, and Olivia & Anna Garrow.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 14 at the United Church of Genoa with Rev. B.L. Foster officiating. Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 PM on Monday, November 13 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 10117 State Route 90, Genoa.
