Obituary of Malcolm E. Gilbert


Mr. Malcolm “Mac” E. Gilbert, 80, of McGraw, N.Y. passed away on Thursday February 7, 2019 at University Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y. after a lengthy illness. Born October 13, 1938 in Cortland the son of Marian and Agnes Nichols Gilbert, Mac was a McGraw resident for most of his life.

Mac had retired from Seneca Supply Co. in Ithaca where he was employed for many years as the parts manager. He enjoyed golf and his membership with the McGraw Lions Club. He was also a two term member of the McGraw School Board and Booster Club. Although raised in another faith, Mac converted to Catholicism and was an active and loyal communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Mac’s greatest enjoyment came from the fact that he was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he cherished all those roles.

Mac is survived by his wife of 53 years; Mary, a daughter; Monica (Steven) Novello of Cortlandville, three sons; Matthew (Cheryl) Gilbert of Myrtle Beach, S. Carolina, Michael Gilbert of McGraw and Malcolm (MaryBeth) Gilbert of Holbrook, N.Y., a brother; James M. (Carol) Gilbert of Santa Rosa, California., and seven grandchildren; Steven, Thomas, Erica, Hannah, Paul, Addison and Brendan. In addition to his parents, Mac was preceded in death by a brother; Raymond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church Prayers of committal in McGraw Cemetery will be delayed until spring. The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home 69 N. Main St., Cortland, N.Y.
