Joseph P. Toomey, 79, of Cortland passed away on Tuesday June 6, 2023 at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, with his loved ones by his side. Born Oct. 4, 1943 in Cortland, Joe was the son of Paul and Virginia (Powers) Toomey and was an area resident his entire life.
Joe will be remembered for the many years as the Proprietor of The Mug and Larrabee’s in downtown Cortland. He then went on to a career with Wegman’s in DeWitt, N.Y. where he was employed as the Service Meat Manager of the Meat Department. Joe was also a long time member of the Cortland Elks Lodge. But nothing gave him greater joy than being a loving husband, father and grandfather. In his retirement, Joe also enjoyed going for cruises in his red Corvette convertible.
Survivors include; his wife, Barbara and two sons; Scott of Los Angeles, CA and Patrick of Cortland., two brothers; John and Michael Toomey both of Cortland and two sisters; Sue Bell of Camillus and Keen DuBois of Homer., four grandchildren; Liam, Sean and Owen all of Los Angeles, CA and Alana of Round Rock, TX.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church. The Christian Rite of Committal will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home 69 N. Main St. Cortland, N.Y.
