Obituary of John W. State Jr.


Mr. John W. State, Jr. 88, of Cortland passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday August 30, 2020. Born December 17, 1931 in Cortland John was the son of John W. State, Sr. And Katherine Reardon State and was a lifelong Cortland resident.

A proud graduate of the 1949 Class of St. Mary’s Parochial School, John went on to attend Cortland Business School and to faithfully serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. John retired after 40 years of employment as a Book Keeper with Robbins Tobacco Co. on Main Street in downtown Cortland. Additionally, he was a faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and an avid fan of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years; Helen Maxwell State, his three children; Mary Beth Conlon, Sally Ann (Dan) Stehm and John W. State, lll (Ruth) all of Cortland., two cousins; Patrick Kiernan of Homer and Jean Kiernan of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; Christine (Kevin) Smith, Thomas, Michael, John, Liam, Mary Kathleen and Ellen Conlon, Aidan and Owen Stehm and Gabriella State, one great grandson; Declan; two sisters in law; Joan Roszkowski of New Jersey and Suzanne Maxwell of Cortland as well as two brothers in law; Michael Maxwell of Cortland and Robert Maxwell of Maine.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Zareski serving as celebrant. Prayers of committal will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home, Cortland, N.Y. Contributions in John’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s School 61 N. Main St. Cortland, N.Y. 13045.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions the following policies will be in place and strictly enforced.

During the funeral home visitation and funeral mass at church, Masks must be worn at all times, social distancing practices will be in place. Funeral home visitation visitors will only be allowed in a few at a time., please be patient and prepared to wait outside. Also, due to Diocesan limitations the committal prayers at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery will be for family only please.
