John Paul Morse was born September 30, 1960 in Cortland, NY to William Paul and Janet Gorman Morse. John died April 21, 2021 from injuries sustained in a logging accident.

John was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing with his family and close friends, shooting trap, pitching horseshoes, cutting timber and firewood and planting crops on the family farm. As a teen, John started racing motocross, and won the NYS Amateur Championship in 1984. For the past 40 years, John could be found at a local dirt track on Saturday nights racing the #84. When he wasn’t enjoying outdoor sports, John loved spending time with family, playing cards, watching movies on the big screen, dancing to country music and shooting pool.

John was a member of the Blodgett Mills Sportsmen’s Club, the DAV and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. John worked at SUNY Cortland, Suit-Kote Corporation and then was the Highway Superintendent in Virgil for 19 years before retirement.

John is survived by the love of his life for 40 years, Sheila “Sam” Morse, their three sons Wade, Jonathan and Thomas Morse, their “daughter” Kristen Angell, special nephews and niece: Chris Stull, Brian Peak and Katie Peak, brother Bill Morse (Joyce Burk), brother-in-law Jim Mott, close friends Rick and Brian Horner, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his two sisters Virginia Mott and Sheila Peak (both in 2020), and brother-in-law Carl Peak.

Calling Hours will be held Thursday from 3 to 7pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, with a funeral service taking place on Friday at 11am at the funeral home. Social distancing will take place and face coverings are required. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Blodgett Mills. Friday’s funeral can be streamed at the Wright-Beard website at 11am.
