Obituary of John F. ‘Jack’ Garvey

John F. ‘Jack’ Garvey, 93, of Homer, passed away on December 16, 2022 in the Groton Nursing Facility.

A lifelong area resident, Jack was born January 27, 1929, a son of the late Francis and Mary Eberhardt Garvey and was a graduate of Cortland High School.

Jack was proud of his Irish and Swiss roots.

He retired after 43 years of service with the New York Telephone Company in Cortland.

Jack was the longest serving member of the Homer Fire Department, having 65 years of membership in Hose Co. #1. Through the years he has served the department in many capacities, including President, Lieutenant, Captain, Warden and Fire Police.

He was also a member of Homer Lodge 2506 BPOE. He loved to hunt and fish, especially deer, rabbit and turkey with his good friend Robert McNeil.

Surviving is his wife Vivian Garvey, two daughters, Kathleen A. Garvey (Ramos Culver) of Westvale and Loreen M. Garvey (Dennis McMath) of Pembroke, MA; a step-daughter, Lisa Vosburgh; a brother, Robert Garvey of Ogden, UT; five grandchildren, Joshua Quinn, Jill (John) Quinn Sasser, Devin (Haley) Shenkar Lynch, Teagan Custy and Dylan Custy; and two great grandchildren, Seth and Meghann Sasser.

He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years Evelyn R. Garvey in 1996 and a brother, James Garvey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, will be delayed until spring.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer.

Memorial contributions in Jack’s name may be directed to the Homer Fire Department, 45 S. Main St., Homer, NY 13077.
