John C. Wetherell, 72, of Cortland, NY passed away on Wednesday June 16, 2021. He was born on May 23, 1949, the son of the late Lawrence and Audrey Schwanke Wetherell.
John was a lifelong resident of Cortland. He graduated from Cortland High School and went on to attend TC3. John served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. John was a barber for 50 years and started with Johnie’s Barber Shop, The Gentleman’s Quarters, and finished his enjoyment of cutting hair and chatting with others at The King’s Den.
He loved to bowl, play golf, loved history, and watching game shows. John also loved to sing and go for rides. John was kind to others; he always had a smile and would give a friendly hello. He liked being helpful in so many ways. John was loved by his children and was always there for them.
John is survived by his wife Devera Wetherell of 49 years, his children Meredith (Andrew) Benesch, Sara (Howard) Showens, Joanne (Martin Jones) Wetherell, and David Wetherell, his siblings Laurel (Bill) Bearup, Gary Wetherell, and Marcia (Daryl) Carter, his 10 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his siblings Philip and Nancy Wetherell.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 19, 2021 at 10:30am at the Grace and Christian Fellowship Church, 1250 Fisher Ave., Cortland, NY.
