James W. MacGregor, 71, of East River Road, Cortland, passed away from complication of COVID-19 on December 24, 2021.
He was born March 20, 1950 in Watertown, a son of the late James and Agnes Castagnier MacGregor.
In 1968, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, proudly serving during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1978 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received numerous awards and citations during his service including the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was employed for 25 years as a corrections officer with the New York State Department of Corrections, retiring in 2005. Following his retirement, he worked as a corrections officer at the Cortland County Department of Corrections for three years.
Jim and Sally enjoyed traveling, having completed several cross-country trips. He also enjoyed doing Native American drawings.
Surviving is his wife of 36 years, Sally L. Shoals MacGregor; his children, Crystal VanDee of Cortland; Bonnie Sanford of Cortland and Shelby (Devin) Walker of McGraw; and a grandson, Jordan Kelley.
Services, with Marine Corp honors, will be announced in the spring.
