Obituary of Glenn J. Merihew

Glenn “Tony” J. Merihew, 93, of Marathon, NY, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the Guthrie Cortland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Cortland, NY.


Tony was born in Freetown, NY, on March 12, 1931, the son of the late James Benton and Ruby Goddard Merihew. A lifetime resident of the area, he was a life member and past fire chief for the Marathon Fire Department. Many years ago, he had belonged to the McGraw Fire Department. He was also a member of the Marathon Lion’s Club. Tony loved to tinker around the barns with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his animals, which were so important to him.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Joan Murray Merihew; and his daughters, Barbara (Bob) McAllister of Harford, Connie Daugherty of Marathon, and Susan (Bob) Marshall of Marathon. He also leaves behind a brother, Marlin “Pete” (Doris) Merihew of Marathon; a sister, Marion Barrows of Brady, TX; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Louise Albro and Norma Salka; and brothers, Carl Merihew and Paul Merihew; and a great-grandson, Steven Larkin.

Memorial services will be held at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Tom Boice officiating. Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Glenn may be directed to the Marathon Fire Department, P.O.
