Obituary of George Asa Courtney
George Asa Courtney Sr., 85, went to be with the Lord on July 12, 2025. He was born on December 9, 1939, in Lapeer, New York, the son of James and Eva (Quail) Courtney.
George was the beloved husband of the late Jeanette Amy (Fisk) Courtney, with whom he shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his children: George (Sue) Courtney Jr. of Lapeer, Connie (Gary) James of Cortland, Judy (Dean) Perry of Lapeer, James (Cecelia) Courtney of Virgil, and John (Culleen) Courtney of Lapeer. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
George had a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, including sister-in-laws Dorothy Kimball and Jeanie Fisk, and brother-in-laws Dick and Tom Kimball. He shared many memories with his cousin, Marty Quail, in the field and abroad.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Jeanette; their son, Randy Courtney; grandson, Dan Courtney; his parents, James and Eva Courtney; and his siblings, Avis, Iris, Lois, and Janis.
George had a deep love for the outdoors, spending many peaceful days fishing and hunting. Most of all, his greatest joy was time spent with family. As a hobby sawyer, he took pride in producing lumber on his Moravia Foundry sawmill, always working efficiently to obtain every board possible from each log.
He left school early to help on the family farm and was self-taught and remarkably intelligent, using his wit and resourcefulness to live a life of quality and purpose. George will be remembered for his strength, sense of humor, faith, and the deep love he shared with those around him.
Forever in our hearts—until we meet again.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on August 3 at Parker Street Cemetery in Lapeer. Immediately following, all are warmly invited to join in a celebration of George’s life from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Civic Center in Marathon, New York.
