Obituary of David J. Stark

David J. Stark, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on November 6, 2023, at the age of 73 in his hometown of Cortland, NY. Born on March 4, 1950, in Cortland, Dave was the epitome of generosity and fairness, instilling wonderful values in his family, such as the Golden Rule. He possessed a remarkable sense of humor and had a knack for offering sage and sometimes sarcastic advice. Dave’s love for his family knew no bounds, and they were his greatest asset. His adoration for his bride, Lynn Johnson Stark, was evident every day, and this summer they joyfully celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Dave is survived by Lynn, their daughter Amy Johnson (Tony Caruso), son Jeffery (Erica), and four amazing grandchildren, Ethan & Owen Johnson and Leah & Colin Stark. He also leaves behind his sisters, Janet Griffin and Judy Butler, along with their children, and his brother in law Bob Johnson (Deborah). Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Clarence Stark, his in-laws, Mildred and Lawrence Johnson, and his brother-in-law, Fred Johnson. Dave’s educational journey began at Parker School, and he graduated from Cortland High School in the Class of 1968. He furthered his education at Ithaca College and the School of Hard Knocks. Dave embarked on a successful career at Payne Brothers Office Supply before taking a leap of faith and opening his own business, CNY Office Products, in 1989. Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Dave established many business and employee relationships with wonderful people in our community. In 1991, Lynn enthusiastically joined him in the business, and they worked side by side for the next 20 years. Dave proudly retired in January of 2012, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication. In addition to his professional achievements, Dave had a passion for basketball. He was a remarkable player at Cortland High School, setting several records that still hold true today. Dave continued to support and cheer on his children and grandchildren in all of their sports and activities. He transformed his home into a haven for family and friends, hosting Friday night neighborhood pizza gatherings, holiday parties, and pool days. These cherished memories were shared with the Yongo Bongo crew, especially with our second family, the DeLaneys. Later in life, Dave loved reconnecting and reminiscing with his childhood friends as well. In honor of Dave’s memory and in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grace and Holy Spirit Church, c/o Feed Our Neighbors, 13 Court St, Cortland, NY, or to Hospicare, 11 Kennedy Parkway, Cortland, NY. These organizations were close to Dave’s heart, and any donations made will help continue their important work. Dave Stark will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, humor, and dedication to family and community will forever be cherished. May he rest in eternal peace
